Well now, if you’re a fella, whether you got a house or just live out in the shed, there’s some tools you sure as heck oughta have on hand. Ain’t nobody can do much without the right stuff, especially when it comes to fixing things or just gettin’ the job done. I’ll tell ya, there’s some tools every man should have if you don’t wanna keep callin’ up the handyman every time somethin’ breaks. Trust me, you don’t wanna be doin’ that. It’ll get expensive, and people will start talkin’. So, let me tell ya about some of the basic tools you really oughta have around.
1. Hammer
This one’s real simple. A hammer’s just about the first tool anybody thinks of. You use it for nails, hammerin’ down things, or even just a bit of fixin’ around the house. It don’t need no fancy explanation. If you ain’t got a hammer, you’re gonna be in trouble sooner or later. Ain’t no way around it. A good, solid hammer is your best friend when it comes to work around the house.
2. Screwdriver
Now, don’t go thinkin’ you can make do with just one screwdriver. You need a whole set. Them screws come in all shapes and sizes, and you ain’t gonna fit ’em all with just one. A flathead, a Phillips head, and a few other types, you’ll find yourself reachin’ for ’em more often than you’d think. I’ve used mine more times than I can count, from fixing a broken chair to takin’ the back off the TV. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with a good set of screwdrivers.
3. Wrench
If you’ve ever had to tighten up a loose bolt or fix a leaky pipe, you know how important a wrench is. You can’t do much with a broken faucet or a loose tire without one of these. Get yourself a couple, different sizes. Ain’t no tellin’ when you’ll need one. I use mine for everything from my garden fence to the old tractor that needs a bit o’ work.
4. Pliers
Pliers are a must-have. They’re real handy for grabbin’ things, bending wires, or even holdin’ stuff still when you need to tighten something up real good. You’d be surprised how often I reach for mine—whether it’s for cuttin’ a wire or just gettin’ a good grip on somethin’ stubborn.
5. Tape Measure
If you’re gonna be buildin’ anything or just rearrangin’ furniture, a tape measure is gonna save your life. It’s simple, but you can’t measure a darn thing without it. Don’t go guessin’ on stuff, ’cause you’ll end up makin’ mistakes. I keep mine in my tool chest, always ready when I need it. You never know when you’ll need to measure the length of a board or the width of a doorway, so it’s always good to have a trusty tape measure close by.
6. Saw
If you ever do any woodworkin’ or even just cuttin’ branches around the yard, a saw is gonna be your best friend. I ain’t gonna lie, there’s a lotta times I’ve had to cut some wood for the fireplace or even fix up the old fence. A good saw will get the job done quickly, whether it’s a hand saw or a power saw. Either way, it’s somethin’ you’ll use more than you think.
7. Level
When you’re puttin’ up shelves or hangin’ a picture, you don’t want it all crooked. A level helps you make sure everything is nice and straight. It’s a simple tool, but it makes a big difference. You don’t wanna look at somethin’ on the wall every day and know it’s all askew. That’s enough to drive you crazy.
8. Mallet
This one ain’t used all the time, but when you need it, it’s sure handy. A mallet is great for when you need to tap somethin’ without makin’ too much noise or mess. You can use it to knock some furniture into place or even help you when you’re workin’ on delicate things that might get damaged from a regular hammer.
9. Utility Knife
Can’t forget a utility knife. I use mine for all kinds of things, from openin’ up packages to trimmin’ some fabric for a new project. It’s one of those tools that you might not use all the time, but when you need it, you’re sure glad you have it.
10. Drill
Last but not least, you need a drill. Whether it’s to put a hole in the wall for a screw or to do a bit of DIY around the house, a drill is essential. Get yourself a good one, and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble. It’s a little more complicated than some of the other tools, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy enough to use. I’ve drilled holes for all sorts of things, from hanging up pictures to makin’ new holes in the fence when the cows get out.
Now, there’s plenty more tools that come in handy from time to time, like an axe or a chisel, but these are the ones that you’ll use most often. They don’t need no fancy talk or explanations. Just simple, hard-working tools that’ll help ya get through whatever comes your way. And trust me, once you’ve got these basics, you’ll be ready for almost anything that needs fixin’ around the house or out in the yard.
