Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Genta, somethin’ or other. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? Don’t rightly know how to say it, but I heard he made them watches, you know, the kind rich folks wear.
Now, they say this Genta, he wasn’t just any watchmaker. He was a, what-cha-ma-call-it, a “pioneer.” That’s like the folks who went west in them covered wagons, I reckon. Only, Genta, he pioneered with gears and springs and such. Made more watches than I got chickens, they say! A hundred thousand! Can you believe that? Must’ve been busy as a one-legged cat in a sandbox.
And these watches, they weren’t no cheap things you find at the five-and-dime. These were the real McCoy, the kind that cost more than my old mule Bessie. He worked for all them big-name companies, the ones you see in them glossy magazines at the grocery store. IWC, Omega, and some other fancy names I can’t even pronounce. But he didn’t just work for them, he had his own brands too. Gerald Genta, and Gerald Charles, I think they were called. Sounded mighty important, let me tell ya.
- He made this one watch, the King Midas, they say it was. Looked like somethin’ from them old Greek pictures. You know, the ones with the pillars and whatnot.
- They say it was inspired by some temple, the Parthenon, I think they called it. Fancy that, a watch lookin’ like a church!
- It had this funny shape, not round like most watches, more like… well, I don’t rightly know how to explain it. But it was different, that’s for sure. And heavy too, like a chunk of iron. Had a thick bracelet, they called it, that looked like them temple pillars I was tellin’ ya ’bout.
Now, this Genta fella, he wasn’t just about watches, they say. He was an artist too! I don’t know nothin’ ’bout art, but I reckon it means he could make pretty things. And I guess watches are pretty, in their own way. All them tiny gears and jewels, sparklin’ and shinin’. It’s a wonder how they make ’em, all small and delicate like that.
But, see, Genta, he’s gone now. Passed on a few years back, they say. Eighty years old, that’s a good long life, I reckon. But even though he’s gone, them watches, they’re still around. And they’re still fetchin’ a pretty penny, I’ll tell ya. Folks are still wearin’ ’em, still showin’ ’em off. And I guess that’s how he’ll be remembered, as the man who made them fancy watches.
Now, somethin’ else I heard, them fancy folks, they’re bringin’ back Genta’s name. Startin’ up a whole new brand, just like it used to be. So, I reckon we’ll be seein’ more of them Genta watches. Maybe they’ll even come out with a watch that looks like my old rooster, now that would be somethin’! But I doubt it’ll be cheap. Nothin’ fancy ever is, is it?
Anyway, that’s what I heard about this Genta fella. A watchmaker, an artist, and a pioneer. Sounds like he was quite a man, even if I can’t pronounce his name right. He made things that lasted, things that people still admire. And I guess, in the end, that’s what matters most, ain’t it? Leaving somethin’ good behind, somethin’ that folks will remember ya by.
