Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get a pair of Red Wing Moc Toe boots for a while now. They just look so damn cool and rugged, you know? But figuring out the right size? That’s been a real headache. I heard all sorts of things about how they fit differently than other shoes, so I knew I couldn’t just order my usual size online.
First thing I did was hit up a bunch of forums and blogs. Some people were saying to go half a size down from your sneaker size, others were saying a full size down. And then there were those who swore you should stick to your true size, especially if you have wide feet. My head was spinning. I even found someone saying that just because your Danner moc toes fit you well doesn’t mean that Red Wing moc toes will! It’s just a style, not a standardized fit.
So, I decided to go to a Red Wing store to try them on in person. That seemed like the smart move, right? I measured my feet on one of those Brannock devices – you know, those metal things they have in shoe stores. Turns out, I’m a size 10.5, which is what I usually wear in sneakers, in fact most sneakers fit larger than your true size.
The guy at the store, he was super helpful. He told me that most people go down at least half a size in Red Wings. He brought out a size 10, and man, those things were snug. Like, really snug. I could feel my toes just touching the end of the boot. He then brought out a 9.5, and although my heel had a little slippage, the ball of my feet were in the right place. After trying for 30 minutes, I am sure that 9.5 is better for me.
He explained that Red Wing Moc Toe’s should hug the foot around the sides and instep. They’re supposed to be snug at first because the leather stretches over time. He said that if I went with the 10, they’d probably end up being too loose after breaking them in. I didn’t want that, obviously.
- The store guy also mentioned that Red Wing Moc Toe boots are known for being comfortable for a variety of jobs, like for electricians, plumbers, and construction workers. That made me feel good, like I was getting some real work boots, even though I mostly just wear them around town.
After trying on like five different sizes, I finally settled on a 9.5. It was a bit of a gamble, but I figured it was better to go a little too small than too big. Plus, the store guy said I could always bring them back if they didn’t break in right. Oh, and they only had D width, which is the most common, so I had to go with that.
The first few days wearing them were rough. The break-in period is no joke. My feet were sore, and I got a couple of blisters. But I powered through, wearing them for a few hours each day. I even bought some of those thick Red Wing socks, which helped a lot. And, that soft crepe sole, I don’t think it’s gonna last long. Let’s see.
Now, after a few weeks, they’re starting to feel amazing. The leather is softening up, and they’re molding to my feet. I can wear them all day without any pain. I’m so glad I went through the hassle of finding the right size. These boots are definitely worth it.
