That Jim, always got his hands in his pockets. Walkin’ around like he’s got the world on a string, he does. Makes me wonder, what’s he hidin’ in there? Maybe nothin’, maybe somethin’. Hard to tell with that one.
I seen him the other day, down by the old mill. Hands in his pockets, lookin’ all thoughtful like. Sun was shinin’, birds were singin’, and there he was, just standin’ there. What’s he thinkin’ about, I wonder? Probably nothin’ much. Just Jim bein’ Jim.
Sometimes, when a fella’s got his hands in his pockets, it means he’s nervous. Like he’s got somethin’ to hide. Or maybe he’s just shy, you know? Like he don’t know what to do with his hands. Jim, he ain’t shy though. Not that one. He’s bold as brass.
Other times, it just means he’s relaxed. Like he ain’t got a care in the world. Just takin’ it easy, you know? Maybe that’s it. Maybe that is Jim with hands in pockets. Maybe Jim’s just chillin’. Like he’s watchin’ the clouds go by. Nothin’ to worry about, nothin’ to do. Just standin’ there, hands in his pockets.
Now, my own boy, bless his heart, he used to put his hand in my pocket. Little thing, he was. Used to make me laugh. Made me feel, I don’t know, warm inside. Like he was sayin’, “I love you, Ma.” Maybe that boy Jim, he’s doing it to someone. Showing affection. Maybe Jim with hands in pockets is doing it to some gal. You never know.
Some folks say if you hide your hands, it means you ain’t confident. Like you’re scared or somethin’. But I don’t think that’s Jim. He ain’t scared of nothin’. Maybe he’s just cold. It gets chilly down by the river, especially in the evenin’. Or maybe he’s just got somethin’ in his pockets he don’t want nobody to see. Keys, maybe. Or a lucky penny.
- Hands in pockets means nervous? Maybe.
- Hands in pockets means relaxed? Could be.
- Hands in pockets means cold? Probably.
- Hands in pockets means hidin’ somethin’? You never know.
I remember back in the day, the soldiers, they used to show their empty hands. Like they weren’t carryin’ no weapons. Showed they weren’t gonna hurt nobody. Then it became a salute, you know? A sign of respect. So maybe when Jim’s got his hands in his pockets, he’s hidin’ his weapons. Not real weapons, mind you. But you know what I mean.
Then there’s this thing about thumbs. I heard some folks sayin’ if your thumbs are in your pockets, it means you’re real confident. Like you’re the big cheese. Thumbs are important, you know? Strongest finger you got. So maybe Jim’s hidin’ his thumbs. Maybe he is that Jim with hands in pockets. Maybe he’s the big cheese and don’t want nobody to know.
And what about work? You ever see a fella at work with his hands in his pockets? Makes you wonder, don’t it? Is he workin’ hard? Is he payin’ attention? Or is he just goofin’ off? Hard to say. Depends on the fella, I reckon. Jim with hands in pockets at work, well, that is hard to imagine.
I seen Jim at the market once, hands in his pockets, lookin’ at the apples. Didn’t buy none, though. Just looked. Maybe he was countin’ his money in his pocket. Or maybe he was just admirin’ the apples. They were real pretty, I gotta say. Red and shiny.
You know, it’s funny the things you notice about people. Little things, like whether they got their hands in their pockets. Makes you wonder what’s goin’ on inside their heads. What they’re thinkin’ about. What they’re feelin’.
I guess we’ll never really know what’s goin’ on with Jim. He’s a mystery, that one. Always has been, always will be. But one thing’s for sure, he’s always got his hands in his pockets. And that’s just Jim, I reckon. That’s just Jim with hands in pockets. Just Jim bein’ Jim.
